Minute 2: Add a syllabus

applies to:

Moodle 1

Add a syllabus to your course page

Objective

Learn how to place links to individual documents in arbitrary content areas.

Notes

As with just about everything else, there's more than one way to accomplish this objective. The goal here is not to describe every possibility, but to offer just two straightforward approaches to getting the job done quickly. The first is the most efficient, so you're welcome to stop there, if you like. The second gives you greater flexibility about how you arrange your files.

One good way to organize material in Moodle is to put individual items directly onto the part of the page where you'd like them to appear. (Instructors can view all the course files, regardless of how they are added, by clicking the link to "Files" in the administration panel in the left-hand margin of the course page.)

Important: If you move a file to some other folder after linking to it from your course page, the link on your course page will fail. The simple file upload method will upload files only to the top level of your course files area. If you wish to have the flexibility to organize the files during upload, please use the slightly more involved upload method described further down on this page.

Summary

  1. Click: Turn editing on
  2. In the uppermost content content area for the course...
    1. Click: Add a resource
    2. Select: Upload a file
  3. Enter a name for the item
  4. Click: Browse
  5. Navigate to the file on your own computer and double click
  6. Click: Save and return to course
  7. Click: Turn editing off

Alternative upload procedure

The method described above is very efficient, so you may be happy to leave it at that. The alternative shown below involves a few extra steps, but it also gives you the option to organize your course files as you upload them. It will be useful if you have your course sorted into folders for different kinds of files, for different weeks of the course, etc. Rather than going straight to browsing the files on your own computer, you will stop first in your Moodle course files area. While there, you can navigate to a desired destination folder, make a new folder, etc.

Summary

  1. Click: Turn editing on
  2. In the top section for the content pane >
    1. Click: Add a resource
    2. Select: Link to a file or web site
  3. Enter a name for the item
  4. Click: Choose or upload a file ...
  5. Navigate to the desired location in your file structure — Course Documents, for example
  6. Click: Upload a file
  7. Click: Browse
  8. Navigate to the file on your own computer and double click
  9. Click: Upload this file
  10. Click: Choose
  11. Click: Save and return to course
  12. Click: Turn editing off
