Minute 1: The tour

Get acquainted with the basic layout of a Moodle course

Objective

Familiarize yourself with the basic elements of our default set-up

Notes

You can customize many elements of a Moodle course. You can add and remove buckets and move them around. You can reorder content areas. You can change themes. To see more about how do customize your course please jump ahead to minute 15.

Summary

Our default Moodle course set up includes:

  1. Header
    1. Breadcrumbs (for navigation)
    2. Role switcher (so you can see what the students see)
    3. Turn-editing-on button (so you can add content to your course, among other things)
  2. Left column
    1. Participants (so you can view enrollments, etc.)
    2. Activities (links created automatically to various activity and content types: quizzes, forums, etc.)
    3. Search Forums
    4. Administration (including the grade book and course settings)
    5. Calendar (Dated activities are added automatically.)
  3. Center column
    1. Top section applies to entire course
    2. Automatically dated sections below for each week of the course
  4. Right column
    1. Quickmail (to email one or all of your students)
    2. Latest news (from your news/announcements forum)
    3. Upcoming events (from your course calendar)
    4. Recent activity (latest additions or changes to the course)
